A Woman Is…..
An Ode to the Powerful Women that we are
My Inspiration
I was inspired to write this poem in 2008 when I was surrounded by a group of beautiful women from all walks of life. We were in the same local chapter of a national organization that was founded by and focused on women. The purpose of the organization was to be of support to “Stay at Home” mothers of color, however it did not discriminate in that area as it welcomed women from all nationalities and cultures. We were a diverse group of women at that time with different nationalities, backgrounds, and current lifestyles.
On that particular day while I was sitting amongst them, I not only saw the brilliance of who we are as women but also the reality that all women do not understand that they are brilliant. I remember feeling sad for some of them because of the things that they felt were burdens, problems, or concerns in their lives. Some of them were unhappy in their home lives due to feeling unappreciated by their husbands and others felt that they were not accomplished enough in their professional lives although most of them (unlike myself) had degrees and or held high paying jobs before they chose to stay home and raise their children. Yet despite what most would say are accomplishments or that one has a good life these women were struggling emotionally. This realization is what inspired me to write the poem above “A Woman Is….”.
A voice of encouragement
As women it is easy to allow others to make us feel less than, or that we are not enough just as we are. It is often an unconscious emotion that builds up over time through our experiences. However, there is always that moment when we open our eyes look in the mirror and see ALL that we are and can be. But, until that moment comes let me remind you that You are Everything I thought You Could Be!
